Jennifer Garner, born April 17, 1972 in Houston, Texas, was raised in Charleston West Virginia. William John Garner was her father and a chemical engineering for Union Carbide. Patricia Ann, her mother taught at a local college. Following in the footsteps of her father she completed an engineering degree in chemical science. But because she wanted to follow her dream of becoming an actor, she relocated into New York to try her luck in the movies. While she was appearing in Broadway plays, she also worked as a server at an adjacent restaurant. Her former husband Scott Foley met her on the TV show "Felicity," where she was a guest. Garner had her first big performance on the screen in "13 Going on 30", a romantic comedy which was widely praised. Garner played a teenage woman trapped in the body of an adult. Garner chose Gary Winick for the role of director. The two continued working together on other projects up to the time Winick passed away in 2011. Garner was awarded the title artist ambassador in 2009 for Save the Children U.S.A. In addition to encouraging the importance of early education, literacy as well as nutrition at a at the national level, his role also includes promotion of the literacy of all Americans. From 2014 onwards, Garner has been a member of the trustees' board of this group, promoting early elementary education. As an ambassador she visits frequently with families that are part of Early Steps to School Success the program which trains parents on how to help youngsters in their learning.
